Stop. Just stop.

There’s a phrase that describes what Democrats are doing right now: they’re measuring the drapes, i.e., they’re assuming that they have the November election already won. Democrats need to sober up — a lot can happen between now and November 7 to turn this thing around for the Republicans.

Yes, I’ve seen the polls, I’ve read the insider stories, like the one that has unnamed Republican strategists bemoaning a certain loss of between 7 to 30 House seats. And/But I’ve read the following story, too, and it sounds fishy — for a different reason:

The official White House line of supreme self-assurance comes from the top down. Bush has publicly and privately banished any talk of losing the GOP majorities, in part to squelch any loss of nerve among his legions. Come January, he said last week, “We’ll have a Republican speaker and a Republican leader of the Senate.”

Whistling past the graveyard? Or is something else going on?

Whatever it is, I would advise you to keep your eye on the ENTIRE chess board:

The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is, as I write, making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran. The ships will be in place to strike Iran by the end of the month. It may be a bluff. It may be a feint. It may be a simple show of American power. But I doubt it

This story has not surfaced in the traditional media. Take it at face value.

  1. Dad’s such a spoil sport. ;-(

I just can’t see them provoking another Tonken Gulf reduex with Iran in this political climate and it working for them. Not one week before the election when it looks like a rout. (that’s the ETA for the Ike on station in the Persian Gulf.)

If the election was close, like it looked to be when they sent the Ike out ahead of schedule, sure. But not post Foley with the GOP looking only to hold on by a hanging chad.

Look instead (it’s a big chessboard) at us boarding a NorK ship, to examine it for weapons heading to help terrorists — allegedly — provoking a skirmish in SE Asia instead.

Iran’s off the radar and will look too contrived — they stopped laying the groundwork for Iran and switched to the other side of the Axis.

If you listen to both State and DoD, they’re talking up the idea of A) Under the UN Res, we can interdict ships from NorK because their ability to sell nukes or nuke tech is a danger to us. B) We’re beyond negotiating with them now, regime change is the only option which will keep us safe. C) SoKor and Japan won’t do it, so it’s up to us.

Besides, we already have the Middle East errupting in flames — but Japan, SoKor, Tiawan and Austrailia are more important to this Star Wars snake oil crowd. They’re customers in a Pacific Rim arms race!!

We have more than enough assets in the area to create another clusterfuck.

Yes it has. Since they left on October 5th or thereabouts. And it ain’t a slam dunk that it’s about Iran, the carrier group being relieved is at the end of their duty cycle.

But I’ll be glad when the first week of November rolls around just the same. A war with Iran would be a perfect October surprise.

Don’t make me stop this car and come back there!

That’s because you’re thinking like Mark Adams and not like “Dick” Cheney.

  4. Oh, I can see Dick doing it. But nobody will buy it.

The fact, of course, that we’ll be at war is a completely different question.
