Hey Professor, Do I Have To Spell It Out For You?

I actually heard a business school professor say the following this morning on NPR, about the government bailout of the auto industry:

(Paraphrasing): “The public won’t stand for it. Why should a waitress earning $12 per hour pay taxes to a government that will give benefits to an auto worker making $60 thousand a year?”

Why? Because if the auto worker loses his job, peckerwood, the waitress loses her tips.

Is that so hard to understand?

P.S. Speaking of waitresses, you should rent Waitress the next time you get a chance. In it, Keri Russell plays a waitress in a pie shop who creates new and creative pie recipes as a way of dealing with her lonely life. For example the “I-Can’t-Have-No-Affair-Because-It’s-Wrong-And-I-Don’t-Want-Earl-To-Kill-Me Pie. Hold the banana.”

Bonus: The terrific Andy Griffith in a cameo.

  1. Sounds like someone who’s been inside the ivory tower all his life and never had a real job.

  2. I’ve known plenty of people with real jobs who still couldn’t buy a clue. In fact, I think they run the country, if I’m not mistaken.

  3. Yeah, it’s comments like the one from the professor that give academia such a poisonous reputation.
