Some say that while the umpire Jim Joyce (any relation…?) blew the call and robbed the Detroit Tigers’ Armando Galarraga of a rare a perfect game, the two of them later provided a rare display of sportsmanship and class — with Joyce apologizing to the kid and the kid forgiving him.
Some might even say that perhaps that display is the takeaway memory that will last long after we forget about the “lost” perfect game.
Personally, I’d love to hear what manager Jim Leyland had to say when he charged onto the filed shortly after the play was miscalled.
The whole thing brings to mind the scene in A League of Their Own, the “no crying in baseball” scene, or more specifically what comes AFTER that scene.
The umpire steps forward to chastise Jimmy (Tom Hanks):
Umpire: Perhaps you chastised her too vehemently. Good rule of thumb: treat each of these girls as you would treat your mother.
Jimmy Dugan: Did anyone ever tell you, you look like a penis with a little hat on?
That’s about where I am with this. Yes, the umpire showed some class, but I’m too much of a diehard baseball fan to simply let it go at that.
